The UN passed a vote calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, with the US abstaining for the first time. AdvertisementThe divide between the US and Israel is deepening after the United Nations passed a ceasefire vote, a first for the international body after multiple failed attempts. Tensions began to boil over Sunday night, when Netanyahu publicly threatened to cancel the White House meetings before the UN vote, demanding the US veto the ceasefire resolution. Later the next morning, the UN Security Council passed the resolution, calling for an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza. Israel continues to deploy soldiers, tanks and armored vehicles near the Gaza border in Sderot, Israel on October 14, 2023.

That’s the way two leading experts on urban warfare described the prospect of a ground attack by Israel on Hamas’ base in the streets and tunnels of Gaza. It’s in a body of knowledge on how to do this big of an urban operation as fast and effectively as possible. Israel continues to deploy soldiers and armored vehicles along the Gaza border in Zikim kibbutz of Ashkelon, Israel on October 14. In the concrete jungle of urban warfare, most of your weapons may not even penetrate the building the enemy is in. After a surprise attack this month, Israel declared war on Hamas and began strikes in the Gaza Strip. "In the coming hours, we can expect a preemptive action by the resistance front," he added, per Reuters. While Amirabdollahian did not specify what he meant by "preemptive action," he also said Israel's enemies are "capable of waging a long-term war," according to Reuters. Around 1,300 people were killed in the attacks, Israel estimated.

One update from September 28 warned, based on multiple streams of intelligence, that the terror group Hamas was poised to escalate rocket-attacks across the border. An October 5 wire from the CIA warned generally of the increasing possibility of violence by Hamas. Intelligence assessments are written by the intelligence community to inform policy makers and enable them to make decisions. For example, Israeli officials failed to recognize routine Hamas training exercises as a sign that the group was preparing an imminent attack. It’s also possible that the Hamas operation was more successful than the group anticipated, one former intelligence official and another source familiar with current intelligence said.

Israel is reeling from the deadly Hamas terror attacks last weekend, with many looking for answers. The surprise assault exposed major shortcomings in Israel's feared military and security and intelligence apparatus. A top IDF officer said the military is to blame, but there are several other things that went wrong. And while a top Israeli officer has acknowledged that the military ultimately mishandled security, the country's troubles appear to run much deeper. Israeli forces continue to mobilize ahead of what appears to be preparations for a ground invasion of Gaza. The IDF said it ultimately wants to strip Hamas of its military and governing capabilities there. War experts say rooting out Hamas will still be a tough fight, given the urban environment. Ultimately, it remains unclear when Israeli forces might actually advance, but it is clear preparations are underway. "So you can believe that they've stockpiled a lot of weapons — not just rockets for attacking into Israel, but for attacking a possible ground invasion."

A judicial overhaul plan pushed by Netanyahu's government sparked a major crisis in Israel. "The crisis was deferred, but definitely not resolved," a former US ambassador to Israel told Insider. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to hit pause on a deeply controversial plan to overhaul the country's judiciary, but Israel's problems are far from over. One piece of the plan has already been passed into law, narrowing the circumstances under which a prime minister can be deemed unfit for office. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attends a voting session in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, in Jerusalem, Israel on March 27, 2023.
Thousands of Israeli protesters rally against Israeli Goverment's judicial overhaul bills in the coastal city of Tel Aviv on February 25, 2023. Gili Yaari | Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesPrime Minister Netanyahu has labeled the protests — which are now approaching their third month — an attempt "to create anarchy" and trigger another election. In short, the proposed judiciary overhaul will severely limit the Israeli Supreme Court's ability to review and strike down laws that it deems unconstitutional. The Knesset — Israel's parliament — voted last week to advance a major part of the reforms. The prime minister himself is currently under investigation on numerous counts of corruption and other charges, meaning he would likely benefit from a weaker judiciary.
The first explosion occurred at a bus station near the entrance to Jerusalem at 7:06 a.m., injuring at least 11 people, including the teen who later died, the spokesperson said. After a second explosion almost half an hour later at the city’s Ramot junction, at 7:30 a.m., three people were evacuated with minor injuries, police added. Mostafa Alkharouf/Anadolu Agency/Getty ImagesThe site of an explosion is pictured near a bus station at the Givat Sha'ul Junction, near the exit from the city of Jerusalem. Two paramedics from Magen David Adom, Israel’s Red Cross affiliate, said when they arrived at the bus station they found two seriously injured people lying on the ground. “We were at the MDA station by the entrance to the city when we heard a large explosion,” they said.
